Casey County Fiscal Court Meets

May 20, 2013 in regular session. In general business gave 1st reading of General Budget Ordinance #13-04, approved a standing order for office supply purchases/stamps. Accepted the Health Dept Budget as a public record. Accepted the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency Budget as a public record. Appointed two Library Board members they are Joberta Wells and Donna Carman. Accepted the salt bid from Central Salt at $66.35 per ton delivered. Judge Executive Ronald Wright appointed Jackie Rodgers to the Tax assessment board for a three year term. Fiscal Court approved giving the eight fire departments one thousand dollars each, and two thousand dollars to the Liberty/Casey Rescue. Judge Wright also reminded everyone that the tire amnesty program is coming up June 6,7,8th at the State Hwy Garage on 127 South. 

Next meeting will be the 1st Monday of June at 5PM.

The leaning tree on the right was on fire Tuesday evening just after a storm moved through 5-21-13 located near Chieftain Steel. Moments later the tree was cut down, it was close to power lines. The lines got near the power lines or it was struck by lightning. rcw

Goose Creek Candle Factory Fire 5-18-13

Just before 7:00AM on Sat morn 5-18-13 the Goose Creek Candle Factory on Campbellsville Street, owned by the Chuck Meece family was reported on fire. The 32,000 square foot building has been completely destroyed along with 75 jobs. Several small explosions occurred from fragrance cans in the back of the building, and 200 - 20 gallon cans were unaffected by the fire. The Liberty Fire Dept. and 7 county depts. came to help with water shuttle for battling the blaze. 3 small dikes were made with backhoes to capture contaminated runoff. Hats off to all local responders for handling this massive fire with no outside help. No injuries were reported.      
 
UPDATE! The KY Fire Marshal's Office was here on Tue 3-21-13 to look into the cause of the fire, while the cause is still pending it is likely to be electrical from indications.

Lights of Liberty Theater gets a new sign, Opening is scheduled for June 7th. Tracey and Laura Hebrock (owners of Sweetbeans Coffe Shop) will open a 2 cinema theater in the old Kentuckian Theater building, the larger will seat 250 or so complete with stage and hi-tech lighting and state of the art sound, and will show 1st run movies. The smaller cinema will be 3-D ready and will run the newest movies after the 1st run. A lot of careful planning and patience has went into the remodeling complete with new seats. This is a huge boost for Liberty/Casey County.

Superintendant Linda Hatter gave a construction update of the Liberty Elementary, Staff reports by Mr. Kevin Stephens on attendance, Mr. Garlden Whitis recommended to change the way the Board sells the project house  to sealed bids, the board agreed, Mr. Victor Black announced that there is enough interest to have a girls soccer team and the board approved a new soccer team. Approved minutes, pay bills, fundraisers, leaves of absence, emergency substitutes, salary schedules, Nurse contracts-Lake Cumberland Health Department, and a new auditor contract, funding for the Leader in Me Program,  the financial budget, and expected a shortfall in the tentative budgets in the next few years.  Considered a grant writing position 40-50 days a year for $10,000. Gave 1st reading to the code of conduct, second reading at next meeting Tuesday May 21st. at Central Office. rcw

 (FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Preliminary
statistics* indicate that eight people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, May 6 through Sunday, May 12, 2013. Three single-fatality, motor vehicle crashes occurred in Jefferson County. None of the victims were wearing seat belts. One of the crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol. One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Barren, Daviess and Jessamine. The victim in Barren County was not wearing a seat belt. One single-fatality, motorcycle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Lyon and Simpson. Neither of the victims were wearing a helmet.
  Through May 12, preliminary statistics* indicate that
190 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 53 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 159 motor vehicle fatalities, 78 victims were not wearing seat belts. Nine of the 16 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one ATV fatality was not wearing a helmet. One bicycle rider has been killed. Twelve pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 37 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of May 12, Kentucky has had 33 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.
  Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting
erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-2225555.
Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
